Small bird of prey taking off from a sign post at Boundary Bay.

I caught this little bird taking off from a sign at Boundary Bay in Delta, BC. It’s not the sharpest shot, but I think the action makes it worth the post. It was also getting dark and I was hand-holding my lens at 400mm, so the ISO jumped way up…nonetheless, I’m still very happy with it.

My second instalment of my favourite photo resources.

I haven’t done this type of post in over a year, so I thought I should add to the list of resources that I like to check out on a regular basis.

Canon Rumors & Canon Watch

As the names imply, they both have to do with being up-to-date on the latest news and releases from Canon. I shoot Canon, I’m really into camera gear, and I’m always looking for the latest news, so it all comes together nicely with these websites.

Good For: Equipment Rumours, Product News, Canon Related Work.

Petapixel

This is another photography news site that almost always has new content when I visit it (except for when I visit it multiple times per hour as a result of my website browsing routine). Articles are to the point and easy to consume. There’s also just a lot of variety in the cool and interesting photography content that they share.

Good For: Photography News, Opinion Articles, Inspiring Work

Digital Photography School

A fantastic resource for learning some of the basics of photography. They do a great job at making complicated concepts really easy to understand. With a great community behind it, it’s a fantastic place to start exploring if you’ve just gotten your first DSLR.

Good For: Learning, Community of Support.

The Digital Picture

A massive collection of very thorough and easy to understand equipment reviews. They are all done by the same person so there’s a great deal of consistency in the work and I find that the assessments are fair and accurate with my own equipment.

Good For: Equipment Reviews

Grey whale breaching off the coast of Ucluelet, BC.

We were enjoying breakfast on the patio at Black Rock when off in the distance we saw something breaking through the water, turns out it was a grey whale! I promptly whipped out the zoom lens and managed to capture the tail of the breaching whale. We watched it for a bit, but it never fully jumped out of the water. Even at 400mm I had to crop the image quite a bit to get the whale to be a decent size in the picture. Either way…I’ve just totally justified the purchase of this lens.

Lennard Lighthouse on Lennard Island near Tofino, BC.

Lennard Island sits in the Pacific Ocean just off the coast of Tofino, BC. I captured this with my telephoto lens zoomed in to 400mm from Chesterman Beach. I love the compression that a telephoto landscape has, it’s a great way to exaggerate the layers in a scene.

Here’s a documentary on Lennard Island by the National Film Board of Canada:
