It was my second trip to Ucluelet and, embarrassingly, on the first trip I hadn’t spent much time exploring the town itself. The town centre was a very short drive from Black Rock resort and since traffic and congestion are non-existent it was really easy to find my way to the Aquarium.
As I walked through the front doors the first thought that came to mind was, “wow, this place is small!” Of course, my only experience with aquariums were the ones that could hold whales and sharks and thousands of screaming children. My thinking quickly shifted away from the size when I began learning about the unique way in which the aquarium operates. What makes it special is that they source all of the exhibits from local waters and they regularly cycle through different marine life. With Ucluelet being right on the edge of the Pacific, you really begin to appreciate the complexity of life that is hidden right below the surface of the water when it’s curated in such a way.
I really enjoyed my time at the Ucluelet Aquarium and I recommend it to others. Admittedly, it’s clearly geared towards children, but if you can call upon your curiosity a visit to the aquarium can be enjoyable for everyone.
